Kicking Off 2023 Well: Relationships — How to Help Friends and Family Understand Your ADHD

Most people don’t understand ADHD.

And that can be a real problem for people with ADHD.

Studies have found that lack of awareness about ADHD and its symptoms can even make symptoms worse — especially in children and adolescents.

One study, published in the journal European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, found that lack of understanding of ADHD by parents can worsen and increase symptoms in their own children with ADHD. Another study found that parental distress about ADHD symptoms can increase behavioral issues in their children.

And another study found that adolescent girls who experienced negative reactions to their ADHD symptoms often had an increase in symptoms.

But better understanding of ADHD is important for reasons beyond how misunderstanding affects symptoms, of course. More knowledge about ADHD and its symptoms can help friends and family better understand everything their loved one is going through — and how they live their life every day. That understanding can lead to more compassion, and improved relationships.

ADHD Online talked with experts to explore all of these issues. Learn more about how people with ADHD can help others better understand their symptoms, and their lives.
